Construction of Bridge Pile Foundations Begins for Australia's AUD 200 Million Victoria Pass Restoration Project

A 76-tonne drilling rig has begun constructing dozens of bored piles with a diameter of 900 millimeters at Mitchell's Causeway, with a maximum pile length of approximately 20 meters. The piles will extend into the bedrock beneath the existing causeway to provide foundation support for the subsequent 120-meter-long bridge deck structure. The project is jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government and the New South Wales State Government, with a total investment of approximately AUD 200 million.

Victoria Pass is located on the Great Western Highway and is an important road corridor between Sydney and the Central West of New South Wales. Mitchell's Causeway was closed in March this year after significant cracking and displacement were discovered. Transport for NSW subsequently initiated a comparison and selection of permanent restoration options, and in May shortlisted two engineering consortia led by Seymour Whyte and Gamuda. Main construction commenced in July 2026. More than 150 workers have completed project induction training, and approximately 40 to 50 workers are on site each day.

Prior to the current pile foundation construction, the project team completed stabilization treatment of the causeway. Once completed, the bored piles will support the new bridge deck, allowing vehicles and heavy trucks to cross over the original Mitchell's Causeway structure while preserving and protecting this historic causeway. After the permanent restoration is completed, the Great Western Highway will resume two-way traffic at Victoria Pass, with an additional climbing lane.

Transport for NSW plans to reopen Victoria Pass by the end of the second quarter of 2027. During the closure of the main corridor, vehicles will continue to detour via Darling Causeway and Chifley Road. To maintain the traffic capacity of the detour route, works including guardrail installation, heavy pavement patching, asphalt paving, and re-marking are currently being carried out simultaneously on Chifley Road.

Victoria Pass has previously undergone multiple rounds of slope restoration. In 2022, extreme weather caused instability at two slope locations along the Great Western Highway, after which the transport authorities implemented reinforcement works including anchor bolts, mesh installation, drainage, and soil nails. This round of permanent restoration at Mitchell's Causeway further adopts a bridge structure to span the unstable area. After the pile foundation construction is completed, work will shift to the superstructure of the bridge and road connection works.
