Egypt Invests EGP 57 Billion to Upgrade Sinai Peninsula Power Grid
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 6, Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced progress on the Sinai Peninsula power grid upgrade, with cumulative investment in the construction and renovation of transmission and distribution networks in North Sinai and South Sinai Governorates reaching approximately EGP 57 billion. The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company has completed 29 substations in the Sinai region, with 1 more nearing completion, bringing the total to 30 once finished. The length of extra-high-voltage overhead lines and underground cable circuits in the area is approximately 3,000 kilometers, while high-voltage lines and cable circuits total approximately 1,150 kilometers.

The transmission projects are being implemented by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, covering substations including New Ismailia, Massaeed, and Sheikh Zuweid, as well as the Zagazig–East Benha 500 kV line, the Ayoun Musa–New Ismailia 500 kV line, and the Nuweiba–Saint Catherine 220 kV line. The Tour Permanent Substation and the East Port Said Development Zone Substation have also been constructed or expanded, while substations in Taba, Massaeed, and Baghdad have undergone capacity expansion. Since July 2025, some overhead transmission lines connecting substations to load centers in new development zones have been completed.
The distribution component of the transmission and distribution upgrade covers 96 towns and villages in North and South Sinai, involving approximately 280,000 users. Completed works include the installation of 550 transformers of various capacities and distribution facilities, the erection of more than 15,000 medium- and low-voltage poles, and the construction of more than 3,800 kilometers of overhead lines and underground cables. The power supply access scope includes residential areas, industrial projects, key public facilities, and seawater desalination plants.
In Sharm El-Sheikh, an automated control center for the medium- and low-voltage distribution network is under construction, with the first phase of the related control system completed. The system involves distribution fault identification and emergency repair management. The area also has electric vehicle charging stations and a solar-powered mobile customer service center, while the fixed customer service center features facilities for investors and people with disabilities.
