Construction of Two Water Supply Projects in DR Congo Contracted by China Weihai International Commences
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 5, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for two urban water supply projects in Kananga, DR Congo, contracted by China Weihai International Corporation, officially launching the first phase of the Lulua River water intake and drinking water treatment plant, and the rehabilitation and expansion project of the old Kanyuka water plant. The first-phase Lulua River water plant is designed with a daily treatment capacity of 75,000 cubic meters. Both projects are part of the World Bank-supported AGREE project and are organized and implemented by CEP-O, the DR Congo water project implementation unit.

The new Lulua River drinking water treatment plant project includes river intake facilities, water treatment systems, pressurized water transmission pipelines, gravity distribution pipelines, and water storage facilities. The project will extract raw water from the Lulua River, treat it, and connect it to the Kananga urban water supply system through transmission and distribution facilities. The project also involves construction of water intake, water quality treatment, clean water storage, and pipeline transmission.
The Kanyuka project will build a new Tshibashi water intake facility, rehabilitate and expand the existing water plant, and construct supporting water transmission facilities. Related works also include water supply networks and water tower facilities in the Ndesha and Palace areas. The two water plant projects respectively undertake the tasks of developing new water sources and upgrading existing water supply facilities, and the supporting pipeline network construction will connect with Kananga's existing urban water supply system.
The Kananga water supply project is part of the DR Congo Electricity and Water Access, Governance and Reform Project (AGREE), funded by the World Bank through the International Development Association. The DR Congo national water utility REGIDESO participates in project construction and subsequent operational integration, while CEP-O is responsible for implementing water investments and supervising project quality, contract progress, costs, and environmental and social management.
According to the overall Kananga water supply investment targets published by CEP-O, by 2029, the related construction projects are planned to increase the city's daily water supply capacity by 122,000 cubic meters, while adding 30,000 household water supply connections and 266 public water points.
