en.Wedoany.com Reported - Starting October 8, U.S. technology company Microsoft officially adjusted the OneDrive cloud storage quotas for Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscription services, changing the previous model in which each user independently enjoyed 1TB of storage space to a shared 2TB storage pool per subscription. The new rules first apply to users who newly purchase subscriptions or repurchase subscriptions after expiration, allowing up to 6 members to share the storage capacity.

This adjustment involves two subscription tiers: Microsoft 365 Family and Premium. The original plan allocated 1TB of cloud storage space to each member separately, providing a total of 6TB capacity when fully subscribed; the new plan no longer allocates a fixed capacity to each member, but instead has the subscription holder and up to 5 invited members jointly use a 2TB storage pool. Each member's files, photos, folders, and mailbox continue to be stored independently, and other members cannot access them without authorization.

Microsoft also adjusted the new subscription storage quota for Microsoft 365 Pro to 5TB of shared space. Microsoft 365 Personal still provides 1TB of independent storage capacity for a single user, and Microsoft 365 Basic continues to provide 100GB of single-user storage space. Family, Premium, and Pro subscribers can expand their storage space up to a maximum of 10TB by purchasing additional capacity.

Existing Family and Premium subscribers will not be uniformly switched over on the day the new rules take effect. According to Microsoft's support page, existing users typically switch to the shared storage model upon their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027; if a user upgrades from Family to Premium in advance, the new quota may also take effect at the time of upgrade. Microsoft's different support pages contain inconsistent statements regarding some renewal dates, and the specific switching time should still be subject to account notifications and the final effective rules.

For accounts using more capacity than the new quota, Microsoft states that users will not immediately lose access to their existing files. Subscribers can clean up files, purchase additional capacity, or adjust their subscription plan; in overage situations, file access can be retained for up to one year, with specific usage restrictions implemented in accordance with Microsoft's storage management rules.
