Optus Australia Deploys Indoor 5G Communication System Covering 8,000 Square Meters for the First Time
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 14, Australian telecommunications operator Optus and Swedish communications equipment manufacturer Ericsson announced the first deployment of the Indoor Fusion 8828 indoor communication system at an Optus store in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. The system uses a combination of the Indoor Fusion Unit 8828 and Radio Dot 4455 distributed radio equipment. A single unit can connect up to 8 Radio Dots, with a designed coverage area of up to 8,000 square meters, supporting indoor 4G and 5G mobile communication services.

This deployment adopts Ericsson's compact indoor radio communication architecture, integrating baseband processing functions and indoor radio units into the same device. The Indoor Fusion Unit 8828 is powered by AC power, supports wall-mounted installation and multi-operator access, and can be deployed in retail stores, shopping malls, hospitals, warehouse facilities, and small to medium-sized commercial buildings. The system provides mobile communication coverage to different indoor areas through Radio Dot distributed radio equipment, reducing the installation requirements of large traditional distributed antenna systems.
The system supports Optus's existing 3.5GHz, 2.1GHz, and 1.8GHz frequency bands and can simultaneously carry 4G and 5G communication services. Its coverage and capacity configuration is aimed at indoor areas with dense users, including services such as mobile voice calls, online video, mobile payments, and business data communications. Ericsson's product technical documentation shows that the Indoor Fusion series is suitable for building areas ranging from 500 to 8,000 square meters, supporting gigabit-level wireless connectivity and multi-operator network sharing.
Optus and Ericsson have previously carried out multiple mobile communication network collaborations. In March 2024, the two parties announced the deployment of a 5G Radio Dot system supporting multi-operator access in Australia and completed related tests at the Optus laboratory in Sydney. The system is aimed at scenarios such as sports venues, multi-story commercial buildings, and shopping malls, and can provide 5G indoor coverage using wireless infrastructure shared by multiple operators.
In March 2026, the two parties also conducted trials of artificial intelligence radio access network link adaptation technology on Optus's live network. Under medium to poor signal conditions, the trial measured a cell throughput improvement of more than 20%. In May of the same year, the two parties completed a 5G standalone carrier aggregation test in a commercial network environment in Sydney, achieving a peak downlink rate of 3.4Gbps and a peak uplink rate of 200Mbps. This indoor system deployment in Coffs Harbour further expands the scope of the two parties' wireless equipment applications in Australia's live networks.
