Vår Energi and Equinor Discover 1.3 to 5.5 Million Barrels of Oil Equivalent of Gas Condensate Resources in Norway

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 19, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate announced the drilling results of exploration well 6407/5-3 S, in which Vår Energi and Equinor discovered gas and condensate in the Lakris prospect in the Gimsan Basin of the Halten Terrace area in the Norwegian Sea. Preliminary estimates of recoverable resources range from 0.2 to 0.9 million standard cubic meters of oil equivalent, corresponding to 1.3 to 5.5 million barrels of oil equivalent. The well is located approximately 170 kilometers northwest of Kristiansund and is the first exploration well drilled within production license 1002.

The primary targets of well 6407/5-3 S were to verify the Cretaceous Nise Formation and the Lower Jurassic Tilje Formation reservoirs. Drilling encountered gas and condensate in the upper part of the Tilje Formation, with a cumulative thickness of approximately 54 meters of heterogeneous hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir of moderate to poor quality; no gas-water contact was encountered in the well. Hydrocarbon shows were found in the lower part of the Tilje Formation; no sandstone reservoir was encountered in the Nise Formation, but elevated gas readings were recorded in the corresponding interval.

The drilling also tested the Garn Formation, Ile Formation, and Tofte Formation, all of which are water-bearing intervals with moderate to poor reservoir quality. No formation testing was carried out in this well; downhole data acquisition and sample collection were completed during the operation. Well 6407/5-3 S was ultimately drilled to a vertical depth of 4225 meters below sea level and completed in the Lower Jurassic interval.

The well was drilled by the COSL Prospector drilling rig in a water depth of 218 meters in the operation area, and will be permanently plugged and abandoned upon completion of drilling. Production license 1002 was awarded on March 1, 2019 under the 2018 predefined areas licensing round, with Vår Energi as operator and Equinor as license partner.
