PowerChina Breaks Ground on World’s Largest Power Generation-Side Battery Storage Project

Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 12, On June 26, construction started on the world’s largest power generation-side electrochemical energy storage project in Ulan Chab, Inner Mongolia. With a planned capacity of 1 gigawatt and 6 gigawatt-hours, the facility is set to enhance the stability of the regional power grid and support China’s transition to clean energy.

The project is managed by a joint venture between China Hydroelectric 16th Bureau and Fujian Yongfu Electric Power Design Co. Ltd., overseeing design, procurement, construction, and operations. Spanning 46.7 hectares, the facility involves an investment of CNY 6 billion (approximately $833 million). Construction is expected to be completed within six months.

The energy storage system will include 1,200 lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery units, each with a capacity of 5.016 megawatt-hours, paired with four 250-megavolt-ampere transformers. This infrastructure is designed to optimize energy storage and distribution, contributing to a reliable and efficient power supply in the region.

Li Wei, project director at China Hydroelectric 16th Bureau, stated: “This landmark project in Ulan Chab represents a significant step toward advancing sustainable energy solutions. By integrating advanced electrochemical storage technology, we aim to enhance grid reliability and support the region’s clean energy goals.”
