SR 47 Interchange Project at the Port of Los Angeles, USA, Completed
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 29, the Port of Los Angeles held a completion ceremony for the SR 47 Interchange Project. The project, costing $139 million, reconfigures key connections between the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Interstate 110, Harbor Boulevard, and Front Street. Its core objective is to separate truck traffic from passenger vehicle traffic to improve cargo flow and vehicle throughput along one of the port's busiest freight corridors.

The scope of work centers on two goals: traffic separation and direct terminal access, with specific configurations confirmed upon completion. The southbound SR 47 off-ramp to Harbor Boulevard has been relocated from the south side of the Vincent Thomas Bridge to the north side, accompanied by new traffic signals; freeway ramps have been reconfigured, and turn and through lanes have been added to Harbor Boulevard; a dedicated lane has also been established to provide direct access to the West Basin container terminals. Together, these four elements form the physical basis for "truck–passenger vehicle separation," with the dedicated lane directly serving container terminal drayage vehicles rather than general traffic.
The Port of Los Angeles secured more than $73 million in grant funding for the project from sources including LA Metro, Caltrans, the South Bay Cities Council of Governments, and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Of the $139 million total cost, grants cover approximately 52%, with the remainder from port funds or other sources. The project was implemented by the Port of Los Angeles in partnership with Caltrans District 7 and broke ground in March 2024.
The timing of completion is directly tied to another project. Caltrans plans to replace the deck of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, with a full bridge closure starting November 7, 2026, lasting approximately 16 months. The SR 47 Interchange was completed before the deck replacement, allowing the traffic reorganization of the port corridor to be in place before the bridge closure and avoiding overlapping disruptions from simultaneous construction. The new Harbor Boulevard on-ramp remains closed after completion, and its opening will be coordinated with Caltrans' deck replacement project.
The Port of Los Angeles handled 10.2 million TEUs in 2025, with trade value of $301 billion. The completion of the SR 47 Interchange does not change the port's throughput capacity; its role is to improve the efficiency of landside access connecting the terminals to the regional highway network.
