en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 28, UK-based mining private equity investment firm Appian Capital Advisory announced a global investment plan for the next 12 to 24 months, intending to deploy US$5 billion to US$7 billion in critical minerals and related mining assets, with approximately US$2 billion planned for Africa. The investment scope covers mine development and potential mineral processing assets, with specific capital allocation to be adjusted based on project conditions and the investment environment.

Appian Chief Executive Officer Michael Scherb noted that the company currently holds 3 active investments in Africa and 4 active investments in Latin America, the latter mainly concentrated in Brazil. The minerals of interest to the company include copper, zinc, gold, rare earths and other critical minerals, with copper resource investment driven by demand related to electrification, artificial intelligence data centers and power grid construction being a key focus area.

In the African market, Appian has identified Morocco, Namibia and Botswana as primary mining investment destinations, while assessing potential opportunities in Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Mauritania and Senegal. Scherb noted that mining regulations, tax policies and project approval conditions in some African countries present uncertainties that are affecting capital allocation, leading the company to consider redirecting some investments to the relatively more stable policy environment of the Latin American market.

On October 30, Paulo Castellari, CEO of Appian's critical minerals business, discussed the company's financing cooperation negotiations with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and other institutions during the Sydney International Mining and Resources Conference. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development confirmed that discussions are ongoing but has not disclosed the potential transaction size or specific terms.

Appian has previously established a mining investment cooperation arrangement with the International Finance Corporation targeting US$1 billion. IFC project documents show that the related emerging markets co-investment vehicle has received a US$100 million equity investment commitment, focusing on supporting metal mining development, restart and expansion projects in emerging markets such as Latin America and Africa.

In terms of investment direction, Appian also plans to evaluate investment opportunities in the mineral processing segment. Castellari noted that processing capacity for certain critical minerals is more likely than upstream mine supply to create supply chain bottlenecks, and rare earth magnet-related processing is an area of interest for the company. Future additional financing partners and specific project investments will depend on subsequent negotiations and investment decisions.
