Australia Tightens Night Cargo Restrictions at Sydney Airport
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 1, the Australian government formally revoked the exemption eligibility for certain cargo aircraft, propeller aircraft and business jets during the night curfew period at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (Sydney Airport). From that date, these aircraft types are no longer permitted to take off or land during the curfew period from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. The curfew hours at Sydney Airport themselves remain unchanged, but the scope of exemptions has been narrowed.

The Australian government confirmed the November 1 date through the Sydney Airport Curfew (Availability of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport for Night Aircraft Movements) Instrument 2026, thereby bringing into effect the existing "exemptions terminate upon WSI opening" clause in the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995.
Previously, up to 74 cargo flights per week were permitted to land at Sydney Airport during the curfew period, requiring approaches via Botany Bay to reduce noise impact; this quota derived from Section 13 of the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995. From November 1, these flights must be relocated to WSI. Calculated at 74 flights per week, this averages approximately 10 flights per night. Also reduced during the same period were passenger exemptions during the 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. "shoulder period": large passenger flights previously operated by Qantas, Singapore Airlines and British Airways during this window must also be rescheduled to after 6 a.m.
Remaining operational channels still exist. Emergency aircraft movements continue to be permitted; the federal Minister for Infrastructure retains the power to approve individual takeoffs and landings under special circumstances. Airservices Australia has clarified that airport curfews and operating slots are set by the Australian government, and that the agency only provides air traffic control services within the existing legal framework and does not determine the restrictive policies themselves.
Overnight sorting that previously relied on Sydney Airport curfew exemptions will henceforth be handled by WSI's 24-hour, curfew-free cargo zone. The first-phase cargo zone at WSI is designed with an annual handling capacity of approximately 270,000 tonnes, with a long-term planned capacity of 1.8 million tonnes; its 24-hour operating model is specifically designed to accommodate this type of night cargo flow. Sydney Airport's role in night air cargo will thus shift from "limited cargo within exemption quotas" to a pattern of "daytime operations predominant, with night cargo concentrated at WSI."
