en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 3, U.S. distributed energy company Sunrun's virtual power plant operating in Puerto Rico expanded to more than 60,000 participating customers, aggregating nearly 70,000 home energy storage batteries, doubling participation compared with 2025. The system can currently provide 45 MW of dispatchable power for four consecutive hours and has executed more than 60 grid dispatches since April 2026, including 18 consecutive days of power supply to the grid starting October 13.

Since Sunrun's Customer Battery Energy Sharing (CBES) program expanded operations in 2024, its customer base has grown from about 4,000 that year to more than 30,000 in 2025, and now exceeds 60,000. According to data published by the company on November 3, Sunrun has become the largest energy storage aggregator in Puerto Rico's CBES program.

In the fall of 2026, Puerto Rico experienced abnormally high temperatures and sustained electricity supply shortages. Local grid operator LUMA dispatched home energy storage resources based on system supply and demand conditions, and Sunrun coordinated participating households' batteries through a unified dispatch platform to release power to the grid. In its June and July operational statements, LUMA noted that home energy storage supply helped the grid cope with generation shortfalls and avoid implementing some previously planned rolling blackouts.

Participating households can decide for themselves how much battery power to share with the grid; most users provide only a portion of their storage capacity, with the remaining power continuing to serve as home backup. Sunrun manages battery resources in a unified manner according to dispatch arrangements, participating customers receive financial compensation for sharing power, and Sunrun earns ongoing service revenue by operating the virtual power plant.
