In 2024, China imported agricultural goods valued at $13.66 billion from SCO nations, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 13.3% since 2001, according to GAC data. This growth underscores the strengthening trade relationships within the SCO, supporting the import of agricultural products to meet domestic consumption needs.

The meeting focused on advancing joint efforts in pest monitoring, early risk warning systems, and the adoption of smart supervision technologies. Participants also emphasized the importance of collaboration in cross-border epidemic prevention to ensure the safety and quality of agricultural imports. These discussions aim to streamline trade processes while maintaining high standards for biosecurity.

Zhao Zenglian, deputy head of the GAC, highlighted the need for improved cooperation, stating: “Cooperation in optimizing risk assessment procedures, accelerating quarantine access, and improving customs efficiency through measures such as sharing data and promoting mutual recognition of electronic certificates is essential.” These measures are designed to enhance the efficiency of agricultural trade while ensuring compliance with safety standards.

The SCO meeting reflects a commitment to fostering sustainable trade practices and supporting the growing demand for agricultural products within China. By leveraging advanced technologies and data-sharing initiatives, the GAC and SCO member states aim to facilitate smoother import processes, benefiting both exporters and consumers.

This initiative strengthens economic ties among SCO countries, promoting mutual growth through increased agricultural trade. The focus on smart technologies and cooperative biosecurity measures positions the SCO as a leader in innovative and responsible trade practices, supporting food security and economic development across member states.
