Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 7, Nord/LB has committed £45 million to finance a 240MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) developed by SAE at the Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park in Newport, Wales. Named Afon Wysg 1 (AW1), this project is the first of four planned BESS assets at the former coal power station site, which SAE is transforming into one of the UK’s largest clean energy hubs.
Construction of the AW1 project is underway, with operations expected to commence in 2027. SAE owns the land, grid, road, and rail infrastructure at Uskmouth, providing advantages in planning, logistics, and long-term operations. The site is projected to support over 1GW of battery capacity in the future, contributing significantly to the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Florian Hock, Senior Director at Nord/LB, stated: “This project is a shining example of what is possible as part of the renewable energy transition. We’re thrilled to support SAE in transforming it into one of the UK’s largest BESS sites, which will not only help the UK to realise its net-zero ambitions, but also ensure vital energy security and grid stability going forward.” The financing reflects Nord/LB’s commitment to supporting sustainable energy initiatives.
Graham Reid, SAE’s Chief Executive, commented: “To have one of the leading banks in the energy transition space is the perfect fit for our strategy and our vision. Our focus now is in the safe and successful construction of the AW1 project and its many years of vital operation.” This partnership aligns with SAE’s goal of repurposing the Uskmouth site for clean energy production.
The AW1 project will enhance grid stability and energy security by storing and supplying renewable energy, supporting the UK’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. The Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park is poised to become a key hub for clean energy, leveraging its existing infrastructure to facilitate efficient development and operations.
Legal support for the financing deal was provided by TLT for Nord/LB and Burges Salmon for SAE, ensuring a smooth transaction process. The project exemplifies how collaborative efforts and strategic financing can drive the transition to sustainable energy, positioning the Uskmouth site as a model for future clean energy developments in the UK.
