Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 22, Webuild Group’s subsidiary Fisia Italimpianti, together with its consortium partners, has completed Lot 2 of the Riachuelo System for Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos in Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to Webuild, this delivery marks the completion of the region’s largest and most advanced wastewater treatment plant, which is already operational. The project is supported by the World Bank and aims to clean up the Río de la Plata basin.

The Riachuelo System comprises a total of three lots.

The plant is expected to improve health safety for over four million residents in Buenos Aires. Serving 14 municipalities, the system has the capacity to treat up to 2.3 million cubic metres of wastewater daily. It also expands the sewage network to reach 1.5 million residents.

The Riachuelo System comprises three lots: Lot 1 collects wastewater, Lot 2—recently delivered by Webuild—pre-treats the wastewater, and Lot 3, also delivered by Webuild, disperses treated water into the river through a subfluvial tunnel. The tunnel is 12km long, positioned 40m below the riverbed, with an internal diameter of 4.3m. Water flows through the tunnel and is released via a diffuser system of 34 vertical steel pipes along the tunnel ceiling to ensure uniform dispersion.

Lot 2, central to the system, includes an inlet pumping station with a capacity of 36m³ per second, a pretreatment facility for 27m³ per second, and an outlet pumping station. This engineering achievement earned the Riachuelo project the ITA International Tunnelling Award in 2021.

The completion of Lot 2 represents a critical milestone in enhancing wastewater management in Buenos Aires and highlights the use of advanced engineering techniques in urban infrastructure projects. The system’s design ensures efficient treatment and safe release of water, significantly contributing to environmental protection and public health in the metropolitan area.

Separately, Webuild Group continues to expand its infrastructure portfolio in Italy. A consortium led by Webuild recently secured a €1.6 billion ($1.86 billion) contract for the construction of a new high-speed and high-capacity railway line connecting Salerno and Reggio Calabria. The contract focuses on the 22.2km Paola-Cosenza section, which will be primarily constructed underground, demonstrating Webuild’s continued expertise in complex tunneling and large-scale infrastructure projects.

These projects reflect Webuild’s commitment to delivering technically advanced, large-scale solutions across urban water management and transport infrastructure. By combining innovative engineering with operational efficiency, the company is supporting environmental sustainability, public health, and connectivity in both Argentina and Italy.
