Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 17, The Port of Tyne, located in northeast England, has revealed plans to extend its infrastructure by adding 400 metres of deep-water quayside. This expansion is designed to support offshore renewables, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing, marking a significant step in the UK’s green energy transition.

The Port of Tyne will invest GBP 150 million (around EUR 173 million) to develop 230 acres into the Tyne Clean Energy Park. The development is expected to generate up to 12,000 jobs and contribute GBP 5.6 billion (approximately EUR 6.5 billion) to the local economy, according to an independent study by WSP. The transformation will also position the North East of England as a hub for the UK's green energy efforts.

The expansion includes plans for a kilometre of both new and redeveloped deep-water, heavy-lift quay, which will enhance the Port’s ability to support offshore wind and renewable energy projects. The site, located within an Industrial Strategy Zone, is strategically positioned to support the growth of the UK's green energy infrastructure.

Matt Beeton, CEO of Port of Tyne, stated: “Accelerating offshore wind, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing is a national priority and requires decisive action. Boosted by Industrial Strategy Zone status that provides similar benefits to a modern freeport, our expanded Tyne Clean Energy Park is uniquely positioned to support this UK-wide initiative.”

The site is located close to emerging North Sea wind arrays and offers deep-water access. With the potential to provide a major development footprint, it will help create the world-class infrastructure needed to support the growing green energy supply chain in the UK. The first phase of the project, Howdon Quay, has already been completed, featuring a 23,024-square-foot warehouse and a dedicated berth, following a £6 million redevelopment.

In 2023, Van Oord chose the Tyne Clean Energy Park as the storage and marshalling base for the foundations of the Sofia offshore wind farm. The construction of this 1.4 GW project is already progressing, with Van Oord recently completing the installation of inter-array cables. The wind farm is located about 195 kilometres off the northeast coast of England, highlighting the significant role the Port of Tyne is playing in advancing the UK’s offshore wind sector.

The Tyne Clean Energy Park is set to become a key player in the UK’s drive towards renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, further reinforcing the Port of Tyne’s strategic importance in the national green energy agenda.
