Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 17, Hanwha Ocean, a major South Korean shipbuilder, has awarded ABB the contract to supply a complete electric power and propulsion system for Singapore’s first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal. This contract marks another milestone in the long-standing partnership between ABB and Hanwha Ocean.

The Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) will feature ABB's integrated electrical system, including a medium-voltage generator, 6.6kV switchboards for cargo and regasification, and the motor, transformer, and drive for propulsion. Additionally, ABB will provide remote control, remote diagnostics systems, condition monitoring solutions, and an enhanced power protection system (EPPS). This collaboration highlights both companies' commitment to reliability, innovation, and sustainability.

The FSRU is set for delivery to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) in 2027 and will be chartered long-term by Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd. With a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters of LNG, the FSRU will be moored at Jurong Port and connected to Singapore's gas network by 2030. The vessel will play a crucial role in enhancing Singapore’s energy infrastructure, supporting the city-state's transition to net-zero emissions.

This new FSRU project is central to Singapore LNG's strategy. The company has signed contracts to process five million tons of LNG per annum at the floating facility, which will significantly increase the country's LNG importing capacity by 50% compared to the existing landside terminal in Jurong. The FSRU will help Singapore diversify its energy sources and secure its position as a major LNG hub in Asia.

Rune Braastad, Global Business Line Manager at ABB’s Marine & Ports division, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “We are proud to continue our long-lasting collaboration with Hanwha Ocean by supplying an integrated electrical system for Singapore’s first FSRU. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and sustainability, and is ABB’s latest contribution to the critical infrastructure supporting Singapore’s position as an important LNG hub in Asia.”

The Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for two-thirds of global LNG demand in 2024, is expected to continue driving growth in the LNG sector. This makes the collaboration between Hanwha Ocean and ABB vital, as both companies contribute to the region's energy infrastructure. Hanwha Ocean, which has delivered 23.4% of the global gas fleet, recently celebrated the completion of its 200th LNG carrier and continues to lead in the construction of FSRUs.

This project not only strengthens Singapore’s energy security but also underlines the growing importance of floating LNG facilities in global energy markets.
