Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 18, Germany installed 1.95 GW of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity in August, according to data from the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur). This was higher than the 1.4 GW added in July 2022 and the 790 MW recorded in August 2024.
Weesow-Willmersdorf solar park in Brandenburg, Germany, may appear unremarkable, but its 164 hectares support many rare birds – especially larks, which breed frequently here.
From January to August this year, developers connected 10.8 GW of solar power to the grid, compared to 10.2 GW during the same period last year. By the end of August, the country’s total cumulative solar capacity reached around 111 GW.
Most installations are concentrated in southern and western regions. Bavaria leads with 29.65 GW, followed by Baden-Württemberg with 13.98 GW and North Rhine-Westphalia with 13.46 GW. These three states together account for a significant share of the national total.
The August results are important in relation to Germany’s target of reaching 215 GW of installed PV capacity by 2030, a goal set under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). To meet this target, the average monthly expansion in the coming years needs to be around 1.62 GW. While the August figure aligns with this path, the average over the last 12 months stood at 1.43 GW, which is below the required pace.
Another key target, placing 50 percent of new installations on open-space sites, was surpassed in August. This segment contributed 1.29 GW, or 72.6% of the total capacity reported. Rooftop and facade systems made up 0.40 GW, equal to 22.6% of the expansion. In addition, the “balcony” category of smaller systems contributed 0.58 GW, or 3.3% of the total.
These figures highlight both progress and challenges in Germany’s solar development. On one hand, the August installation level demonstrates capacity to achieve growth aligned with the long-term strategy. On the other hand, the average pace of expansion over the past year suggests further acceleration is needed to consistently meet targets.
The distribution of installations across open-space, rooftop, and balcony systems shows the diversity of solar adoption pathways. While large-scale ground-mounted projects dominate recent additions, smaller systems also contribute steadily to the overall expansion.
With cumulative solar capacity now above 110 GW, Germany remains one of the leading solar markets in Europe. The next steps will focus on maintaining stable growth rates, encouraging balanced deployment across different system types, and ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with rising generation capacity.
The Federal Network Agency’s latest update underlines the importance of sustained monthly additions to achieve the 2030 goals. Continued efforts in project development, grid connection, and supportive policy implementation will be central to maintaining momentum in the solar sector.
