Wedoany.com Report-Dec.9, China's COSCO Shipping Corporation has signed the largest single domestic shipbuilding contract in history, ordering 87 new vessels from shipyards under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) in a deal valued at over RMB 50 billion (approximately $7.07 billion).
The order covers a wide range of vessel types, including containerships, oil and product tankers, dry bulk carriers and multipurpose ships. Construction will be distributed across several major CSSC facilities, namely Jiangnan Shipyard, Guangzhou Shipyard International, Wuchang Shipbuilding, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, Beihai Shipbuilding and Chengxi Shipyard.
The contracting entities within the COSCO group include COSCO Shipping Lines, COSCO Shipping Bulk, COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation, COSCO Shipping Development and COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers.
All vessels will incorporate latest-generation energy-efficient hull forms, alternative-fuel-ready propulsion systems and advanced digital and AI-supported operating platforms, supporting both the International Maritime Organization's decarbonisation targets and China's broader maritime industry modernisation objectives.
This record-breaking package forms part of COSCO's ongoing fleet renewal and expansion strategy initiated last year. In 2025 alone, the group has already committed to additional newbuildings, including a $1.75 billion programme for 29 vessels across multiple segments and further newcastlemax bulk carriers, maintaining its position as the most active buyer in China's large dry-bulk newbuilding market this year.
The latest orders further strengthen domestic shipyard orderbooks and demonstrate continued confidence in China's shipbuilding capabilities, which currently lead global newbuilding output in both volume and technological advancement. Delivery of the 87 vessels is scheduled progressively over the coming years, significantly enhancing COSCO's capacity and environmental performance across key shipping segments.
