Wedoany.com Report-Dec.11, A joint venture between SPC Construction and Lane Construction, the U.S. subsidiary of Italy's Webuild Group, has completed the new Unionport Bridge over Westchester Creek in the Bronx, New York.

The $232 million project replaces the original bridge built in the 1950s. The new structure features two parallel single-leaf bascule spans, providing a total of six traffic lanes (three in each direction), together with dedicated pedestrian walkways and protected bicycle lanes on both sides.

The bridge serves as a vital link connecting major roadways, including the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway, and Hutchinson River Parkway, ensuring smooth traffic flow for local residents and regional commuters.

Construction teams have fully installed the mechanical and electrical systems required for reliable bridge openings, allowing safe passage for marine traffic beneath. Advanced lighting, signage, and safety features have also been added to improve visibility and security for all users during day and night operations.

Designed for a service life of 75 years, the new Unionport Bridge incorporates modern engineering standards that enhance durability and reduce long-term maintenance needs compared with the previous structure.

Completion of the project marks the successful delivery of upgraded infrastructure that supports multiple modes of transportation in the Bronx while maintaining essential navigation access along Westchester Creek. The facility now operates at full capacity, offering improved safety and efficiency for vehicular, pedestrian, and cyclist traffic as well as vessels using the waterway.

The initiative focused solely on domestic infrastructure development within the United States and does not involve international imports, exports, or consumption of goods. The new bridge stands as a long-term investment in regional connectivity and public safety for the New York metropolitan area.
