Wedoany.com Report-Dec.11, Global consumption of specialty papers is projected to reach 28.1 million tonnes in 2025 and climb to 31.3 million tonnes by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%, according to the latest Smithers report, The Future of Specialty Papers to 2030.

The comprehensive study analyses 45 distinct specialty paper grades across regions and countries, identifying flexible packaging papers as the primary growth driver. Machine-glazed papers already dominate sales and will continue to lead demand expansion. Coated one-side (C1S) packaging papers are also expected to experience robust growth, supported by several machine rebuilds in the United States and new production lines entering service in China.

Sustained replacement of plastic packaging with paper-based alternatives is accelerating innovation in functional barrier coatings. Leading manufacturers are investing heavily in advanced coating formulations, improved substrates, and novel application techniques. Nano-cellulose is increasingly incorporated into both base papers and coatings to enhance barrier properties, strength, and printability.

Regulatory developments worldwide are encouraging brands to transition toward paper packaging, while simultaneously introducing new requirements for recyclability. These rules are prompting closer examination of coated, metallised, and treated papers to ensure effective recovery in existing recycling systems.

Printing and communication grades remain a significant segment despite overall volume pressure in traditional applications. Notable exceptions include strong continued growth for thermal papers and lightweight opaque grades used in publishing and direct mail.

To meet evolving market needs, specialty paper producers are upgrading production equipment. Major chemical suppliers have launched intelligent dosing control systems that optimise additive use, improve machine runnability, and reduce downtime during grade changes and start-ups. Progress in curtain coating technology is enabling multiple functional layers to be applied in a single pass, increasing efficiency and product performance.

The Asia-Pacific region, led by China, continues to strengthen its position as the global centre for specialty paper manufacturing and consumption. Currently accounting for 46.0% of worldwide production, the region's share is forecast to rise to 48.7% by 2030, with India also recording above-average growth. This geographic shift reflects both expanding domestic demand and substantial investments in modern, high-capacity paper machines across the region.

Smithers concludes that, despite challenges from substitution and recycling regulations, the specialty paper sector will benefit from sustained innovation and favourable structural trends in sustainable packaging through the remainder of the decade.
