Wedoany.com Report-Dec.19, The Central Florida Expressway Authority has approved the $2.5 billion Southport Connector Project, a 24-kilometer toll road designed to alleviate traffic congestion by linking Poinciana Parkway with the Florida Turnpike. The initiative includes construction of elevated roadway sections and new intersections to enhance connectivity in the region.

In addition, two separate highway widening initiatives in Florida, totaling $718 million, have received approval. The more substantial undertaking, valued at $500 million, involves expanding a portion of Interstate 4 (I-4) between the interchange with Interstate 75 (I-75) and County Line Road.

This 27-kilometer segment will incorporate express lanes equipped with advanced dynamic tolling systems. Originally scheduled for 2037, the project has been advanced to commence in 2028 to address growing congestion concerns more promptly. The Hillsborough County Transportation Planning Organization has endorsed the plan, which also features a new parking facility in Polk County capable of accommodating 100 trucks.

The second widening effort, costing $218 million, focuses on adding a fifth eastbound lane to State Road 408 (SR 408) between I-4 and Orange Blossom Trail. This improvement aims to reduce traffic buildup ahead of major events at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Construction on a new interchange at Tampa Avenue is set to begin soon, with completion targeted for 2029. Additional enhancements will involve upgrades to existing interchanges and on- and off-ramps. Managed by the Central Florida Expressway Authority, the project incorporates modern tolling technology to optimize traffic flow.

Upon completion, these developments are anticipated to significantly ease congestion in the Orlando area, improving travel efficiency for commuters and supporting regional transportation needs.
