Dutch Firm Rolls Out Substation Topside for Denmark’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm

Wedoany.com Report-Nov 20, The Dutch company, HSM Offshore Energy, has rolled out the offshore high-voltage substation (OHVS) for the Thor offshore wind farm and lifted the GIS modules for RWE Renewables at its Schiedam yard in the Netherlands.

The offshore substation will function as the central hub, collecting electricity generated by Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbines and transforming it to transmission-level voltage.

Renewable energy from the substation will be transported via export cables to the new onshore substation at Volder Søndervang in Denmark.

HSM Offshore Energy is responsible for the full engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) scope of OHVS and its jacket foundation, under a contract signed with the project’s developer RWE in 2022. The first steel for the Thor offshore substation was cut in December 2023.

The installation of the jacket and the substation is scheduled for 2025, followed by commissioning and testing in 2026, with RWE Renewables set to assume operation in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The 1.1 GW Thor offshore wind farm is being built approximately 22 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland in the Danish North Sea.

At the beginning of 2025, seabed preparation for construction activities will take place, and offshore construction will then kick off in spring with the installation of the foundations. Turbine installation is scheduled to begin in 2026 and is planned to be performed from Esbjerg Port.

Recently, RWE picked Thyborøn Port as the offshore construction base for its Thor offshore wind farm.
