Wedoany.com Report on Feb 2nd, According to the latest official data released by Eurostat, nuclear power generation in the European Union region showed robust growth in 2024. The data indicates that the 12 EU member states with nuclear power facilities collectively generated 649,524 gigawatt-hours of electricity that year, a significant increase of 4.8% compared to the same period in 2023.

This growth reflects the continued importance of nuclear power as a stable, dense baseload power source within the EU's energy system. Amidst the dual goals of energy security challenges and the green transition, nuclear energy, due to its near-zero carbon emission characteristics, has become one of the key technological pathways for the EU to achieve its climate neutrality goals.

Looking at the specific composition, nuclear power giants led by France were the main contributors to this growth, with their electricity generation accounting for over half of the EU's total nuclear output. Other major producers include Spain, Sweden, Belgium, and Germany. Although energy policies differ among member states—for example, Germany completed its nuclear phase-out in 2023—countries like France and Poland continue to advance plans for extending the lifespan of existing reactors or building new ones to ensure energy autonomy and replace fossil fuels.

The release of this data not only provides a key quantitative basis for observing changes in the EU's energy structure but also confirms the systemic value of nuclear power in ensuring grid stability and supporting the intermittency of renewable energy. Within the framework of the EU's Green Deal and the "REPowerEU" energy autonomy strategy, the technological evolution and policy positioning of nuclear energy will continue to influence the low-carbon transformation of Europe's future power structure.
