Russia Announces Long-Term Plan to Add Approximately 30 GW of Nuclear Power Capacity
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Russian President Vladimir Putin announced at a meeting on nuclear energy development on August 20 that Russia plans to add approximately 30 GW of nuclear power capacity in the long term, including both large-scale units and small and medium-sized nuclear power plants, while expanding the layout of nuclear power stations to the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East. Putin stated that this plan is not only intended to replace existing nuclear units that are gradually reaching the end of their service life, but will also significantly increase Russia's total installed nuclear power generation capacity.

Currently, Russia's installed nuclear power capacity stands at approximately 29 GW, with 37 operating units distributed across 11 nuclear power plants, and nuclear power accounts for about 20% of the country's total electricity generation. According to the energy strategy previously published by the government, Russia plans to increase the share of nuclear power to 25% by 2045. If the target of adding 30 GW is achieved, Russia's nuclear power capacity will more than double compared to current levels, exerting a profound impact on the domestic energy structure.
Regarding overseas markets, Putin stated that the export order book of Rosatom includes 28 nuclear power units. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev revealed at the meeting that the group is currently building 28 nuclear power units in 10 countries and has reached agreements to build an additional 17 nuclear power units in another 6 countries. Previously published information shows that Rosatom's key overseas projects include the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey, the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt, and the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh, with some of these projects already in the equipment installation or commissioning stage.
Putin also stated that Russia currently has 18 nuclear power units under construction domestically. He proposed that Russia needs to enhance the technical maturity of the design and construction of large and small nuclear power plants, develop standardized series of nuclear units suitable for mass production, and advance the nuclear fuel cycle system, while strengthening geological exploration and mineral resource development to support future large-scale nuclear expansion. The meeting coincided with the 81st anniversary of the founding of Russia's nuclear industry.
