According to the latest report from Weidu Network, the European electric vehicle market showed significant growth momentum in 2025. Data indicates that EV sales in the region reached 2,572,491 units, a year-on-year increase of 29%, accounting for 19.5% of total vehicle sales. Meanwhile, overall European car sales saw only a slight rise of 2.2%.

In the fiercely competitive market, Volkswagen took the top spot with 274,278 EV sales, achieving a 56% year-on-year increase. Tesla ranked second with 236,357 units sold, representing a 27% year-on-year decline. This shift made Volkswagen the champion of European EV sales.

Multiple brands under the Volkswagen Group performed excellently in the European market. Škoda ranked fourth with 171,703 units sold, while Audi placed fifth with 153,845 units. Cupra and Porsche also entered the top twenty with sales of 79,269 and 32,715 units, respectively.

Despite Tesla's overall sales decline, its Model Y remained Europe's best-selling electric vehicle with 149,805 registrations, though sales fell 28% year-on-year. Model 3 sales dropped 24% to 85,393 units. Registrations for the Volvo EX30 also decreased by 37% to 49,110 units.

The European Union recently adjusted its EV development policy. In December last year, the EU executive body stated that new cars sold after 2035 could still include plug-in hybrid or internal combustion engine models, marking a shift from its earlier goal of complete electrification.

The global electric vehicle market continues to expand. A report from UK research firm Rho Motion shows that between July 2024 and July 2025, EV sales in China reached 6.5 million units, a 29% year-on-year increase. Tesla recently adjusted its business model, removing free Autopilot functionality and requiring users to pay a $99 monthly subscription for Full Self-Driving service. The company is also advancing autonomous taxi testing in several U.S. cities and obtained testing permission in Phoenix, Arizona, by the end of 2025.
