Wedoany.com Report on Feb 13th, Spanish energy company Acciona Energía has signed an agreement with China's CATL to supply a 1 GWh battery energy storage system for the Malgarida photovoltaic park located in Chile's Atacama Desert. The photovoltaic park has been operational since 2021 with an installed capacity of 238 MWp. Chile's National Energy Commission has confirmed that the project has entered the construction phase and is expected to be officially commissioned in early 2027.
The project will utilize Tener Stack battery technology. The manufacturer states that this solution can reduce construction costs by approximately 30% by optimizing the footprint and reducing auxiliary equipment. This will mark the first deployment of this battery technology in the Latin American region.
The Malgarida Solar Park's battery energy storage system, with a capacity of 1 GWh, can store electricity generated during peak sunlight hours and dispatch it at night or during periods of high demand. This configuration helps enhance the stability of the power plant's supply, reduces curtailment of solar power during periods of surplus generation, and displaces some conventional thermal power generation.
Acciona Energía's total operational generation capacity in Chile is 922 MW, including three wind farms—Punta Palmeras (45 MW), San Gabriel (183 MW), and Tolpán Sur (84 MW)—and five photovoltaic plants, such as El Romero Solar (246 MWp), Usya (64 MWp), Almeyda (62 MWp), and Malgarida (238 MWp). The company is also developing three additional energy storage projects paired with solar facilities, with a total capacity reaching 1.5 GWh.
