What Is JT/T 280-2022 Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint?
JT/T 280-2022 is the current Chinese standard for road marking paint. It replaced JT/T 280-2004 and updated the classification, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and packaging requirements for road marking paint.
For thermoplastic road marking paint, JT/T 280-2022 focuses on two types:
- · Reflective thermoplastic road marking paint
- · Profiled thermoplastic road marking paint
The older thermoplastic ordinary type is no longer included under the 2022 thermoplastic classification. Reflective and profiled types both require ≥30% premixed glass beads.
This makes JT/T 280-2022 more suitable for projects where the customer needs stronger standard compliance, improved reflectivity foundation, and better performance control than older Chinese standard formulas.
Key Upgrades from JT/T 280-2004 to JT/T 280-2022
JT/T 280-2022 is not just a name update. It changes several important technical requirements for thermoplastic road marking paint.
| Item | JT/T 280-2004 | JT/T 280-2022 |
|---|---|---|
| Thermoplastic Type | Ordinary / Reflective / Profiled | Reflective / Profiled |
| Premixed Glass Beads | Reflective / profiled type: 18–25% | Reflective / profiled type: ≥30% |
| Softening Point | 90–125℃; profiled type ≥100℃ | 100–140℃ |
| Drying Time | ≤3 min | ≤5 min |
| Compressive Strength | ≥12 MPa; profiled tested at 50℃ | 23℃ ≥12 MPa; 60℃ ≥2 MPa |
| Thermal Deformation Resistance | Not clearly required | ≥90% |
| Total Organic Content | Not clearly required | ≥19% |
| Raw Material Control | Basic product performance | Glass beads, resin and polyethylene wax requirements |
| Packaging | General packaging requirement | EVA packaging bag requirement |
The biggest practical difference is the glass bead content. Under JT/T 280-2022, reflective and profiled thermoplastic paint requires at least 30% premixed glass beads, which is higher than the 18–25% requirement in JT/T 280-2004.
Available Types Under JT/T 280-2022
Reflective Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint
Reflective type is used for standard road markings where night visibility is required. The paint contains ≥30% premixed glass beads and is normally used together with drop-on glass beads during application.
Recommended for:
- · Lane lines
- · Edge lines
- · Center lines
- · Pedestrian crossings
- · Urban roads
- · Highways
- · Government road marking projects
Profiled Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint
Profiled type is used for raised or vibration markings. It provides a tactile and audible warning when vehicles pass over the line.
Recommended for:
- · Edge lines
- · Rumble lines
- · Dangerous road sections
- · Curves
- · Rainy or low-visibility areas
- · Warning markings
- · Roads requiring vibration feedback
Under JT/T 280-2022, profiled thermoplastic paint also requires ≥30% premixed glass beads, and its flowability requirement is different from reflective type.
