A balanced check valve, sometimes called a “standard valve”, is a device that blocks downward flow but allows upward flow through it. The check valve is lowered and seated in an assembly with an upper step and can be used to pressure test tubing, set hydraulic packers, and prevent fluid from entering the reservoir when a gas lift installation is aborted.
A balanced check valve is a completion device (not a flow control end) that sits on a stop step on the landing joints. The stop step prevents downward movement, but the valve is not locked in the nipple to prevent upward movement. During recovery operations, the check valve is balanced by switching to open the large bypass hole.
