The lock-open tool is used to permanently lock and open the tubing retrievable downhole safety valve. The lock-open tool can be used in the event of a downhole safety valve failure. After the downhole safety valve is permanently locked open, an isolation sleeve or a wire retrievable safety valve can be used to provide a channel for the control fluid to enter the valve.

The valve plate of the tubing retrievable downhole safety valve is permanently locked open, requiring two wireline operations. During the first run, the lock-open tool enters and locks onto the landing step of the tubing retrievable downhole safety valve. Retracting the wire running tool attached to the lock-open tool causes the tool to release the worm spring and keep the valve plate in the open state. Retract the lock-open tool during the second run.
