Wedoany.com Report on Mar 9th, The results of the International Urban Design Competition for the Zhuyu Bay Area in Pingtan, China, were recently officially announced. The "Mountain-Sea Joy City" design proposal, submitted by a consortium consisting of the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tongji University, Kengo Kuma & Associates, and the Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute, won first place. This proposal is located in the Zhuyu Bay area of Pingtan Island's hinterland, with the site backed by mountains on one side and facing the sea on the other, featuring a complete bay form and a continuous mountain forest backdrop.

The "Mountain-Sea Joy City" proposal takes ecology as its foundation, integrating mountain forest and water system resources. On this basis, it plans small-scale blocks, returning waterfront space to daily use. The proposal revolves around three major industrial directions: yachting, film and television, and cultural tourism. The coastline forms an overall pattern of "one bay reflecting two cores, one corridor encircling six zones," including six functional sections: Dynamic Bay Area, Coastal Charm, Scenic Mountain Range, Cultural Lakeside, Waterfront New Town, and Ecological Forest Zone. Iconic buildings take wind and waves as their imagery, with cable cars and viewing platforms distributed across the mountain slopes, expanding the layered sense of coastal living.

According to the design proposal, the area will construct supporting facilities including a yacht marina, a 5,000-square-meter film and television base, a coastal commercial block, and fourth-generation residential buildings. The Zhuyu Bay Film and Television Base was formerly the Pingtan Liya Shipyard, and a 5,000-square-meter digital soundstage was completed in 2019. The first phase of the Zhuyu Bay Yacht Base is under construction, with plans for 40 berths. The Zhuyu Bay area covers approximately 25 square kilometers, with a key design scope of about 15 square kilometers. The competition was guided by the Natural Resources and Ecological Environment Bureau of the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone and hosted by the Pingtan Cultural Tourism Development Group Co., Ltd.
