Wedoany.com Report on Mar 13th, Recently, several European countries have made progress in the field of battery energy storage systems (BESS), including Germany, Belgium, France, Finland, Latvia, and Portugal. Investors and operators such as Field, Aspiravi, Prime Capital, Latvenergo, Sonnedix, and Amarenco are advancing large-scale projects with a total capacity of approximately 700MWh, covering commissioning, construction, and financing stages.

In Germany, owner-operator Field has commissioned a 16MW/33MWh battery energy storage system in Waldkappel, Hesse. ABO Energy sold the facility to Field in Q2 2025 and participated in its construction. The system uses a modular rack design instead of traditional containers, which may align with Fluence's Smartstack technology, potentially marking its first application in Europe. Philip Hainbach, Managing Director of Field, stated, "Waldkappel is our first project in Germany, demonstrating the speed and reliability of modern BESS implementation." Headquartered in the UK, Field is active in multiple European countries.

In Belgium, independent renewable energy power producer Aspiravi has begun construction on its first BESS project, a 60MW/240MWh system expected to be operational in 2027. Meanwhile, Centrica Energy signed a five-year flexibility purchase agreement with Renner Energies for a 12MW/24MWh project in Virton. Renner started construction in November 2025, with commissioning expected this year. Centrica described this as the first such transaction in Belgium.

In Latvia, state-owned power company Latvenergo is advancing a project through contractor Nordes Būve, with system integrator Merus Power supplying two 20MW/40MWh BESS orders. The contract is valued at €22.5 million, with Merus Power's services accounting for up to €15 million. This is the company's first project in Latvia.

In the Finnish market, Germany's Prime Capital has entered by acquiring an 85MW/170MWh BESS project from developer SENS for a total purchase price of €5.5 million. Prime Capital has previously gained attention for investing in large-scale projects in Germany.

In Portugal, Spanish independent power producer Sonnedix secured financing for its first hybrid solar-BESS projects, supporting the Acail project (28MW solar and 24MW BESS) and the Felgueiras project (40MW PV and 32MW BESS). The solar plants are expected to be operational in Q2 2026, with the BESS to follow. The company stated this is one of the first commercially bank-supported hybrid project financings in Portugal and plans to expand into other European markets.

In France, Irish independent power producer Amarenco raised €65 million in debt financing for the repowering and expansion of its Claudia BESS project. Originally a 105MW/100MWh system, it is being expanded to 94MW/188MWh. Battery delivery is expected this quarter, with commercial operation scheduled for 2027 under a long-term agreement with Engie. These developments indicate continued activity in the European BESS market, with diverse project scales and technological applications.
