Wedoany.com Report-Feb 25, The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for unit 1 of the Lianjiang Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in China has been transported to its construction site in Guangdong province. Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group produced the RPV, a key component for the facility.

The Lianjiang NPP, located in Guangdong, represents a total investment of CNY130 billion ($18.1 billion). The project is designed to include six CAP1000 pressurized water reactors, each with a capacity of 1250 megawatts. The first unit is scheduled to begin operations in 2028. Phase 1 of the project consists of two units. The plant will operate alongside hydrogen production facilities and energy storage systems, forming part of a comprehensive energy hub. A distinctive feature of the Lianjiang NPP is its recirculating seawater cooling system, supported by large-scale cooling towers, making it the first nuclear power plant in China to adopt this approach.

“The successful delivery of the reactor pressure vessel of unit 1 marked the beginning of the transition of the long-cycle main equipment of the Lianjiang Nuclear Power Phase I project from the manufacturing stage to the delivery stage,” stated State Power Investment Corp (SPIC), the entity overseeing the project.

China’s State Council granted approval for the construction of the first two CAP1000 reactors in September 2022. Site excavation for these units started in the same month. The pouring of concrete for the foundation of unit 1 was finalized in September 2023, while the same milestone for unit 2 was achieved in April 2024. The completion and operational start of unit 1 remain on track for 2028.

The delivery of the RPV signifies steady progress in the development of the Lianjiang NPP. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to contribute to the region’s energy needs through its six reactors. The integration of nuclear power with hydrogen and storage systems reflects a broader strategy to diversify energy sources in Guangdong province. The use of advanced cooling technology further highlights efforts to adapt the plant to its coastal environment. Construction timelines and technical details align with the planned schedule, ensuring the project advances as anticipated.
