Wedoany.com Report-Feb 26, LoCI Controls, a company specializing in real-time monitoring and control technology for landfill methane capture, announced on February 20, 2025, the outcomes of its project at Loess Hills Regional Sanitary Landfill. This facility, owned and managed by Iowa Waste Services LLC, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, Inc., achieved significant methane capture between 2021 and 2023. During this period, the project eliminated methane emissions equivalent to approximately 229,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e), comparable to taking more than 53,300 gasoline-powered vehicles off the road for a year.

The results highlight the landfill’s efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to environmental improvement. The captured CO2e, measured using the ACR methodology for Landfill Gas Destruction and Beneficial Use Projects, has been converted into carbon credits. Selling these credits provides an additional income stream and encourages capturing methane beyond regulatory requirements.

Peter Quigley, CEO and chairman of LoCI Controls, stated: “LoCI’s real-time data and actionable insights empower landfill operators to make informed decisions, whether it’s resolving daily operational challenges or planning long-term infrastructure investments. Our partnership with Loess Hills Regional Sanitary Landfill and Waste Connections demonstrates how innovation can drive greater efficiencies and success for landfills, and downstream beneficial use of the captured methane. We’re proud to support their efforts and remain committed to enhancing gas capture and operational excellence in the years ahead.”

Situated in Malvern, Iowa, the Loess Hills Regional Sanitary Landfill introduced a voluntary methane collection and destruction system in 2021. In 2023, LoCI Controls upgraded this system with advanced gas automation and control technology. Combined with new landfill gas collection infrastructure integrated into cell construction projects, the setup allowed earlier, more efficient, and dependable gas collection from fresh waste. This led to increased methane volumes and improved consistency in gas quality.

The LoCI system facilitates frequent monitoring and control of wells across both inactive and active landfill zones, reducing air infiltration and optimizing methane recovery. It also allows autonomous stabilization of gas composition, enhancing operational efficiency and safety for personnel at the site.

The project showcases a practical approach to managing landfill methane, supporting both environmental goals and operational benefits through technological advancements and strategic partnerships.
