en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Málaga, Spain, recently completed liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering services at anchorage, marking the first such operation at the port. The operation supplied this alternative fuel to two container vessels operated by shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

The first vessel to be bunkered was the "MSC Audrey," receiving approximately 5,500 cubic meters of LNG; subsequently, on the same operational day, the "MSC Virginia" was bunkered with 7,000 cubic meters. The two operations totaled 12,500 cubic meters of LNG, conducted in a ship-to-ship mode and strictly adhering to the relevant procedures established by the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel.

Participating entities included the Maritime Authority, the Port Authority, as well as harbor pilots, tugs, and ship agents. This anchorage bunkering differs from previous supply operations conducted at quayside berths, enriching the service capabilities of the Port of Málaga. The port has authorized such operations in the outer anchorage since October 2025, and had previously conducted ship-to-ship bunkering of bio-LNG.

By conducting LNG bunkering at anchorage, the Port of Málaga has further expanded its service footprint in the supply of alternative fuels in the Mediterranean region. As the shipping industry's demand for clean fuels grows, the flexibility and accessibility of bunkering services have become key components of port competitiveness.
