en.Wedoany.com Reported - German transmission system operator 50Hertz has signed a full turnkey EPC contract with Siemens Energy and the NSORe consortium for the delivery of the offshore converter station platform and onshore converter station for the North Sea Connector 2 project, which is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2034.

The North Sea Connector 2 includes the LanWin6 offshore grid connection system and the DC32 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link, both of which are part of the NordOstLink transmission corridor. In this project, the offshore converter station platform will be installed approximately 200 kilometers west of the island of Sylt in the German North Sea, while the onshore converter station will be built at a new substation near Mühlenbeck, close to Schwerin, where NordOstLink will connect to the transmission grid in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

As early as 2023, 50Hertz awarded multiple contracts to power cable manufacturers NKT and Prysmian. Among these, NKT's scope of work covers onshore and offshore power cable systems for the SuedOstLink+ (SOL+), Ostwind 4, DC32 (NordOstLink+), LanWin 6, and the German portion of the hybrid interconnector for the Bornholm Energy Island project.

According to 50Hertz, the contract with Siemens Energy and NSORe marks the first time that an offshore converter station platform based on Germany's new 2 GW standard will be primarily built domestically. NSORe, a joint venture between Meyer Werft's Neptun Werft and Belgian company Smulders, is responsible for manufacturing the offshore platform. Most of the construction and fabrication work will take place at Neptun Werft's shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, while Smulders will manufacture the steel jacket foundation at its shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands.

Siemens Energy will provide transmission technology, including transformers, converters, and switchgear. According to the company, approximately 95% of the scope of work for the North Sea Connector 2 project will be delivered by German facilities, with transformers and converters manufactured in Nuremberg and SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear supplied from Berlin. In addition to the EPC contract, Siemens Energy has also secured a long-term service agreement covering maintenance, IT services, and on-call support. The consortium is responsible for the full turnkey delivery of the project, including system design, procurement, construction, offshore and onshore installation, and commissioning.

50Hertz is also in negotiations with NSORe for a second converter station platform project—North Sea Connector 1. This project includes the LanWin3 offshore grid connection and the DC31 HVDC link, both part of NordOstLink. Siemens Energy was awarded the high-voltage technology contract for this project in 2024, and Prysmian secured the cable portion contract in 2023. If the second contract is signed, these two projects would bring a total volume of approximately €2.5 billion to NSORe, primarily involving manufacturing and services in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to 50Hertz, these projects could create more than 500 long-term jobs at participating companies and suppliers in the state.
