Cyprus's Cronos Gas Field Expected to Supply Europe by March 2028

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 7, Cyprus's Energy Minister Michael Damianou stated that the country's offshore Cronos gas field plans to commence gas supply as early as March 2028, with the gas produced from the field to be transported to Egypt for processing and liquefaction before being shipped to Europe. Project partners Eni and TotalEnergies made a final investment decision in July, moving Cronos into the development phase.

The Cronos gas field is located in Block 6 offshore Cyprus and is the country's first natural gas project to enter the development phase. Eni serves as the operator with a 50% interest, while TotalEnergies holds the remaining 50%. The development plan includes the construction of four subsea production wells, with an expected production capacity of approximately 500 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, equivalent to about 2.8 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year.

The gas produced from the field will be transported via subsea pipeline to Egypt, where it will be processed using existing facilities at the Zohr gas field, and then sent to the Damietta LNG plant for liquefaction and export. TotalEnergies will be responsible for marketing 50% of the project's LNG output, approximately 1.4 million tons per year.

The Cronos gas field was discovered in 2022 and appraised in 2024, with natural gas resources exceeding 3 trillion cubic feet. In February 2025, Cyprus, Egypt, and the project partners signed a host government agreement, confirming the development and export of Block 6 resources using Egypt's existing natural gas processing and liquefaction facilities.

The project's development investment is estimated at approximately $2 billion. Under current arrangements, some of the natural gas may be supplied to the Egyptian domestic market, while the remaining output will be liquefied and exported to European and other international markets. The project is overall scheduled to commence production in 2028.
