en.Wedoany.com Reported - Ontario has awarded a total of 640 MW of eight-hour battery energy storage projects through the Long-Term 2 Capacity Window 1 tender. According to the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA), three projects were selected, all of which include 50% Indigenous equity.

These contracts were awarded through the LT2 Capacity Window 1 tender managed by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). CanREA revealed that its members are involved in all three projects, involving Atura, Neoen, and Six Nations Group.

According to CanREA, Ontario has now awarded a total of approximately 3.6 GW of utility-scale battery energy storage projects. The province expects a significant increase in future electricity demand as electrification accelerates and industrial load grows.

Vittoria Bellissimo, President and CEO of CanREA, stated that Ontario has the largest battery energy storage projects in Canada, and other jurisdictions are observing and learning from the province's experience. She noted that Canada needs more wind power, solar energy, and storage to meet future energy needs, and congratulated all selected proponents for advancing these projects.

Ontario is rapidly advancing its energy storage project portfolio. The province achieved financial close on a 1.2 GWh battery energy storage facility at the end of 2024; the results of this LT2 Capacity Window 1 were announced against the backdrop of previous record-breaking tenders that have established the province as a key market for large-scale energy storage in North America.
