en.Wedoany.com Reported - KDDI and KDDI Research, Inc. announced on June 23, 2026, that they will collaborate with NVIDIA, Keysight Technologies, and Samsung Research America to jointly explore the construction of a "Digital Twin RAN (high-fidelity Digital Twin RAN)." This platform aims to accurately replicate actual networks in a virtual space, serving as a safe and efficient foundation for AI-driven network optimization, autonomous operation, and evaluation in the 6G era. The five companies plan to build a prototype demonstrating the scalability of the Digital Twin RAN by the end of fiscal year 2028, and strive to make it applicable to multiple use cases by the end of fiscal year 2030, subsequently conducting performance verification on KDDI's commercial network.
In the 6G era, communication quality requirements will further intensify, and AI upgrades are indispensable for achieving regional optimization. However, continuous AI upgrades require learning and verification of massive amounts of data, which, if conducted in a real environment, would lead to extended cycles and security risks. By utilizing the Digital Twin RAN, AI learning and verification can be performed without affecting the actual network, enabling a large number of scenario verifications under various conditions.
The Digital Twin RAN is primarily envisioned for application in the following two scenarios. Use Case 1 is a learning and evaluation platform for network optimization AI. This platform enables AI learning and verification without impacting the real environment, allowing simultaneous parallel simulation of multiple scenarios with different conditions, thereby significantly increasing the number of trials. Additionally, it can pre-verify "what-if situations" such as potential future environmental changes or traffic fluctuations to achieve proactive regional optimization.

Use Case 2 is a field trial platform for new RAN functions (AI). In the diverse virtual environment of the Digital Twin RAN, new functions and algorithms can be evaluated simultaneously, in parallel, and comprehensively, which helps ensure high quality and significantly shorten development cycles. This platform is primarily applied to the technical verification of what is called the "AI air interface," a technology that uses AI to predict and support various RAN processes to achieve communication quality improvement and energy savings. According to the company, this will enable it to provide customers with high-quality communication services utilizing cutting-edge AI technology more rapidly.
