en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 6, Brazil's National Research and Education Network RNP selected Nokia and systems integrator Q13 to modernize its national research and education backbone network, rede Ipê. The new network will build a secure, automated, and high-performance IP backbone architecture, serving more than 4 million research and education users in Brazil and enhancing data transmission capabilities among universities, research institutions, and related innovation platforms.

The upgrade plans to deploy more than 350 routers, forming an aggregated network capacity of 4.8 Tbps and reserving an architecture for subsequent evolution to 800G connectivity capabilities. Nokia will provide core, aggregation, peering, and general carrier edge network equipment, primarily using the 7750 Service Router and 7250 Interconnect Router platforms; Q13 will be responsible for network deployment, migration, and implementation.

The new architecture will focus on carrying traffic generated by data center interconnection, large-scale research data exchange, private wireless networks, and artificial intelligence applications. Through this upgrade, RNP plans to expand high-capacity connectivity among different research institutions and support large-scale collaborative research in fields such as health, climate science, biodiversity, and engineering.

rede Ipê is the core infrastructure of Brazil's National Research and Education Network and one of the larger research and education networks in Latin America. This upgrade incorporates core, aggregation, and edge routing capabilities into a unified IP architecture and, through automated network management, improves link scheduling and service delivery capabilities, providing a network foundation for subsequent high-bandwidth research applications and AI computing tasks.

This announcement has clarified the equipment scale, aggregated capacity, technology platforms, and division of implementation responsibilities, but has not yet disclosed the project contract amount or the complete construction timeline. After network implementation is completed, rede Ipê will continue to serve as the national-level research communication backbone among Brazilian universities, research institutions, and innovation platforms.
