en.Wedoany.com Reported - Polish railway operator PKP Intercity has signed a contract with its maintenance subsidiary PKP Intercity Remtrak for the modernization and long-term maintenance of 14 Type 609A baggage and passenger carriages.

The contract includes a P5-level comprehensive overhaul, full modernization of the carriages, and multiple periodic inspections and repairs over the coming years. After the work is completed, Remtrak will provide ongoing maintenance for these vehicles until the next major modernization, with the overall planned maintenance period lasting approximately 23 years. The total value of the contract is approximately €45.4 million, equivalent to PLN 193.1 million. After modernization, the carriages will have a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h.

A key change in the modernization involves a complete reconstruction of the original cargo space, repurposed into an area suitable for passengers carrying sports equipment. The new layout can accommodate up to 24 bicycles, 20 pairs of skis, and 14 snowboards, offering tailored solutions for both summer and winter seasons. The passenger area has also been modernized, with second-class carriages equipped with new ergonomic seats. The interior layout includes 32 fixed seats and 8 folding seats to allow for more flexible use of space.

Bicycles will be loaded through large central doors designed for rapid loading. The project also requires replacing the bogies, installing an air conditioning system, equipping closed toilets, and integrating a modern passenger information system. This investment is part of PKP Intercity's extensive railway vehicle modernization program, which is considered one of the largest of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe. By modernizing the Type 609A carriages, the Polish operator aims to meet the growing demand for transporting bicycles and sports equipment while incorporating modern comfort and accessibility standards into long-distance services.

Janusz Malinowski, Chairman of PKP Intercity, stated that implementing the company's ambitious investment plan requires reliable partners and a solid technical foundation. Between 2026 and 2030, PLN 18.3 billion (€4.3 billion) is planned for the modernization and procurement of railway vehicles, funds that will benefit Polish industry.
