Alstom Secures EUR 4.2 Billion in Rolling Stock Orders in the UK and Canada

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Since September, Alstom has successively won two major rolling stock contracts in the UK and Canada, with a total value of approximately EUR 4.2 billion. The UK project includes 29 five-car battery-powered multiple units and long-term maintenance services, while the Canadian project includes 313 next-generation long-distance passenger railcars and 15 years of technical support and spare parts supply. The two orders will be designed, manufactured, and supported locally in the UK and Canada respectively.

On September 11, Alstom signed a contract with UK-based TransPennine Express worth more than EUR 1.2 billion, of which approximately EUR 930 million is for the procurement of 29 five-car battery-powered multiple units and approximately EUR 230 million is for maintenance services. This project marks the first entry of Alstom's Adessia platform into the UK market and the first deployment of battery-powered trains on the UK's mainline railway, with the first units planned for delivery from 2032.

The project adopts a turnkey implementation model. In addition to vehicle manufacturing and long-term maintenance, Alstom will also build charging infrastructure in Hull, Scarborough, and Saltburn. The new trains can operate on existing electrified lines and use onboard batteries to traverse non-electrified sections, primarily serving routes in northern England including Liverpool, Manchester, York, Hull, Scarborough, and Saltburn, while also supporting the Transpennine Route Upgrade rail improvement project.

On September 3, Alstom signed a CAD 4.7 billion (approximately EUR 3 billion) long-distance rail vehicle agreement with Canada's VIA Rail Canada. Of this, approximately CAD 4 billion is for the design, manufacture, and delivery of 313 Adessia passenger railcars, and nearly CAD 700 million is for 15 years of technical support and spare parts supply. The new vehicles will replace VIA Rail's existing long-distance fleet, covering eight major long-distance, regional, and remote rail routes across Canada and serving nearly 400 communities.

The Canadian project will be implemented primarily through Alstom's local manufacturing system. Vehicle design and engineering work will be completed in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, car bodies will be manufactured in La Pocatière, and final assembly will take place in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The vehicle products will cover various uses including coach cars, sleeper cars, compartment cars, dining cars, baggage cars, and panoramic cars to meet Canada's long-distance and remote rail operating needs.

The two contracts total approximately EUR 4.2 billion, with vehicle procurement quantities reaching 29 battery-powered multiple units and 313 long-distance passenger railcars respectively, further expanding the application scale of Alstom's Adessia platform in the European and North American markets. The UK project focuses on adding battery traction, charging infrastructure, and maintenance requirements, while the Canadian project drives local supply chain orders in car body manufacturing, final assembly, components, spare parts, and long-term technical services.
