Costa Rica Completes Restoration of 13 Railway Facilities

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Costa Rican National Railway Institute completed the restoration of 13 railway infrastructure facilities in the San José and Cartago areas and carried out final acceptance of the works, with a total project investment of approximately US$2.046 million. The works covered 11 railway bridges, the Calderón railway tunnel, and the Bermúdez/Pedregal level crossing, all of which had previously been listed as railway structures posing imminent operational risks.

The facilities completed in this batch include the railway bridges near the Condominios Tres Ríos, Colina Montealegre, Granadilla, Río Reventado-Taras, San Joaquín, Los Lagos, Acueductos, Vicesa, Oreamuno, San Nicolás, and Tres Ríos stations, as well as the Calderón tunnel and the level crossing. The works involved maintenance, structural strengthening, and restoration of existing railway facilities.

The project falls under Costa Rica's "Comprehensive Infrastructure Resilience Reconstruction Emergency Program" (PROERI), with construction funding provided by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration. PROERI covers hundreds of public infrastructure intervention projects across the country, and these 13 railway works are part of its railway asset restoration component.

Some structures directly affected railway operations during construction between March and April 2026. At that time, the National Railway Institute arranged phased suspensions of San José–Cartago train services to carry out works including the Oreamuno, San Nicolás, and Vicesa railway bridges and the Calderón tunnel; the related passenger services resumed normal operation on April 13.

After completion of the 13 works, the National Railway Institute is still implementing other railway structure projects in the Greater Metropolitan Area and Limón. Among them, the project for another 6 railway bridges in the Greater Metropolitan Area includes inspection of existing structures, design, and strengthening and restoration work; the bridges involved include El Fierro, Museo, Atlántico, Calderón, Los Negritos, and El Español.
