Port of Charleston Launches Daily Direct Rail Intermodal Service to Huntsville

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 11, the South Carolina Ports Authority and Norfolk Southern Railway officially launched daily direct container rail intermodal service from the Port of Charleston to Huntsville, Alabama. The new route is now in operation, providing import and export cargo with a direct rail corridor from the Port of Charleston into markets in northern Alabama and central Tennessee, serving primarily automotive, aerospace, electronics, pharmaceutical, advanced manufacturing, and regional distribution companies.

The new route uses Norfolk Southern Railway for rail transport, connecting the Port of Charleston's ocean container network with the Huntsville inland logistics hub. Approximately 25% of the South Carolina Ports Authority's container volume is currently moved by rail. In addition to Huntsville, the existing rail network also connects to inland markets including Memphis, Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, Charlotte, and Louisville, and organizes container rail transport through the two inland ports of Greer and Dillon.

Huntsville is home to Huntsville International Airport, the International Intermodal Center, Foreign Trade Zone 83, and the Jetplex Industrial Park, enabling connections between rail, road, and air freight. Northern Alabama and the Tennessee Valley are home to aerospace, defense, automotive, electronics, technology, and advanced manufacturing companies, and the new route primarily handles import and export container transport between these regions and the Port of Charleston.

The launch of this route is also the latest milestone in the Port of Charleston's expansion of inland rail coverage. In 2025, the South Carolina Ports Authority completed a $55 million expansion project at the Greer inland port, increasing cargo handling capacity by 50% and adding 9,000 feet of rail track to accommodate longer train consists. Norfolk Southern Railway currently provides daily and nighttime train services to Greer.

In terms of cargo flows, South Carolina, where the Port of Charleston is located, exported approximately $38 billion in goods in 2024, of which manufactured products accounted for approximately $37.2 billion and transportation equipment exports approximately $19.2 billion; during the same period, imports of automotive parts, engines, and transmissions exceeded $3.5 billion. The new direct rail service to Huntsville further extends the port's ocean shipping network to the manufacturing clusters of the southeastern United States.
