en.Wedoany.com Reported - Vertex Energy Inc. has approved a project at its subsidiary Vertex Refining Alabama LLC's refinery and petrochemical complex in Mobile, Alabama, to increase production of conventional petroleum-based Group III base oils using existing and new processing equipment. The facility has a processing capacity of 75,000 barrels per day.
Vertex stated that the refinery will utilize crude-derived vacuum gas oil streams from existing hydrocracking units, combined with on-site related processing infrastructure and a newly procured high-pressure lubricant hydrotreating unit, to achieve an additional 6,000 barrels per day of conventional Group III base oil capacity.
The project will also support the production of 4 centistoke (cSt) as well as higher viscosity 6 cSt and 8 cSt Group III base oils. This is part of the company's plan to provide lubricant manufacturers and blenders with more U.S.-produced high-quality Group III base oils.
Vertex stated that this latest investment is expected to position the company as a leading Group III base oil producer in North America. This goal combines its recent project in Mobile, which has commenced production of new high-viscosity Group III re-refined base oils (RRBO).
Vertex noted that with the completion of preliminary project design work and procurement of the high-pressure lubricant hydrotreating unit, the Mobile refinery is expected to begin production of conventional Group III base oils in 2029.
