Shell Indonesia's 12,000-ton-per-year grease plant goes into operation

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 15, Shell Indonesia officially inaugurated its new grease manufacturing plant located within the Marunda lubricant blending plant complex in Bekasi. The new plant has a designed annual capacity of up to 12,000 tons, making it one of Shell's larger grease production facilities globally. It will complement the existing Marunda lubricant blending plant, further expanding Shell's local lubricant manufacturing capacity in Indonesia.

Construction of the project began in 2024, and it is wholly owned and operated by Shell. The plant adopts production technologies such as contactors and focuses on manufacturing Shell Gadus series industrial greases, available in various packaging formats including drums, pails, and flexible packaging according to customer needs. The products are mainly used in equipment such as bearings and gears, serving industrial sectors including manufacturing, steel, smelting, pulp and paper, power, transportation, construction, and mining.

With the new plant in operation, it will further supplement the existing capacity of Shell's Marunda production base. The lubricant blending plant at the base had previously completed an expansion, increasing its annual capacity from 136 million liters to 300 million liters. With the addition of 12,000 tons of grease capacity, the Marunda base's product portfolio has extended from lubricant blending to industrial grease manufacturing, enhancing local supply capability and product coverage.

Indonesia's Ministry of Industry stated that the project will provide localized lubricant products for industries such as manufacturing, mining, and transportation, and will help enhance Indonesia's lubricant manufacturing capability. The government hopes that as capacity and competitiveness improve, the Marunda plant will be further integrated into Shell's regional production network in the future, enabling grease produced in Indonesia to supply broader regional markets.
