KMG International Advances Renovation of Five Storage Tanks at Petromidia Refinery

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 8, Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company KazMunayGas (KMG) announced that its subsidiary KMG International is carrying out major repairs and modernization of five storage tanks at the Petromidia refinery in Romania. Upon project completion, the refinery's total storage capacity for feedstock and finished petroleum products is expected to increase by 20%. The five tanks are currently at various stages of construction, with one distillate storage tank used for diesel production already fully reconstructed, its capacity increased from 5,000 cubic meters to 6,000 cubic meters.

The renovation also includes one gasoline storage tank, two diesel and component storage tanks, and one crude oil storage tank. The gasoline tank is planned to be expanded from 5,000 to 6,000 cubic meters, while the two diesel and component tanks will each be expanded from 10,000 to 12,000 cubic meters. Additionally, a crude oil tank with a capacity of 57,000 cubic meters is undergoing modernization. Rompetrol Rafinare stated that both newly built and renovated tanks are equipped with corresponding process systems and safety facilities.

The project employs hydraulic jacking technology, using specialized hydraulic jacks to assemble the tanks starting from the roof and upper shell courses, thereby reducing work at height. Each tank project involves approximately 100 specialists, including designers, engineers, construction crews, refinery personnel, and subcontractors. Rompetrol Rafinare noted that since 2007, more than 60 storage tanks at its operated Petromidia and Vega refineries have undergone repair and modernization.

The Petromidia refinery is operated by Rompetrol Rafinare. In the first half of 2026, the refinery processed nearly 2.6 million tons of feedstock and produced approximately 2.1 million tons of fuel, with about 70% of petroleum products supplied to the Romanian domestic market. Rompetrol Rafinare's main shareholders are KMG International, holding 54.63% directly and indirectly, and the Romanian government's energy department, holding 44.7%.

This storage tank renovation is part of Rompetrol Rafinare's multi-year investment plan for storage infrastructure. In March 2026, the Petromidia and Vega refineries also completed a round of scheduled maintenance, during which over 700 maintenance operations were carried out, approximately 900 static, dynamic, and electrical equipment units were inspected, and nearly 1,200 pipelines were checked and tested.
