PetroChina's Tarim 1.2 Million Ton Ethylene Project Fully Enters Commercial Operation

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 15, PetroChina announced in Beijing that the Dushanzi Petrochemical Tarim 1.2 million tons/year Phase II Ethylene and Supporting Green Low-Carbon Demonstration Project, located in the Shangku High-Tech Industrial Development Zone of Korla, Xinjiang, has fully entered commercial operation. Since achieving successful first-time startup on July 16, the project has cumulatively produced more than 260,000 tons of ethylene and supplied 566,000 tons of chemical products externally, with a product qualification rate of 100%. With the project officially entering commercial operation, PetroChina has formed a 3 million-ton-level ethylene industry operating capacity in Xinjiang.

The project completed full-process commissioning on July 25, with 8 core units including full-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and butadiene rubber stably producing qualified products; on August 12, the supporting green low-carbon demonstration project was fully put into operation, with the fertilizer unit producing qualified products; on September 24, the project completed its first high-load calibration, with multiple technical and economic indicators outperforming design values, and the comprehensive energy consumption of the units reaching the domestic leading level. Polypropylene and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) products have been exported to the Central Asian market.

Of the 11 main production units of the project, 10 adopt domestic independent technologies, of which 9 adopt PetroChina's independent technologies, achieving an overall localization rate of 99%. The project has built China's first ethylene three-machine electric drive unit adopting independent technology, with the ethylene cracking, compression, and related production systems adopting electric drive solutions. The project uses ethane and other light hydrocarbons extracted from deep processing of natural gas from the Tarim Oilfield as raw materials, and is equipped with polyolefin and synthetic rubber production facilities.

The project is designed to produce 900,000 tons of full-density polyethylene, 450,000 tons of polypropylene, and 100,000 tons of butadiene rubber annually, with total rubber and plastic product capacity reaching 1.45 million tons. The green low-carbon demonstration project adopts the technical route of "green electricity direct connection + carbon capture + blue hydrogen + blue ammonia + green fertilizer," and can consume 1 billion kWh of green electricity annually, and produce urea by recovering carbon dioxide from ethylene cracking furnace flue gas. As of the release of the commercial operation announcement, the project has cumulatively captured and utilized more than 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide, produced more than 120,000 tons of green urea, with a designed annual carbon reduction of 1.37 million tons.
