en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has received an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine Co., Ltd. to supply the MAmmoSS® ammonia fuel handling system.

Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine (HZME) is a dual licensee of Everllence SE and WinGD, the primary licensors of marine engines. The MAmmoSS® system will be designed and optimized for ammonia marine engines from both licensors. After delivery to the HZME facility, it will be used for workshop testing of both engine types.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) continues discussions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. The 80th session of the MEPC adopted the "2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships," targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by 2050. The 83rd session of the MEPC approved mid-term emission reduction measures.

Global shipping decarbonization has become a critical issue. Ammonia fuel, as a next-generation marine fuel, has attracted significant industry attention due to its zero carbon dioxide emissions during combustion, and is expected to substantially contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry. However, ammonia is a toxic liquid, making safe onboard handling technology essential. This demand is driving increased need for the MAmmoSS® system.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding stated that it will continue to provide safe and reliable products for ammonia-fueled vessels to support anticipated market expansion, while enhancing functionality and delivering greater value to meet diverse customer needs. The MAmmoSS® system consists of an ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS), an ammonia gas abatement system (AGAS), and control equipment for integrating and regulating these systems. It is a registered trademark of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in Japan and other countries.

A licensee refers to a company authorized to use a design or technology, while a licensor refers to a company that grants a license to use a design or technology.
