en.Wedoany.com Reported - Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) has completed the acquisition of artificial intelligence software development tool Cursor for $60 billion. Cursor, legally named Anysphere, is widely known in the industry for its flagship service of the same name. This acquisition has rapidly elevated Cursor's profile in the global AI software industry, reflecting SpaceX's optimistic outlook on AI software development platforms.

Cursor is an AI-driven integrated development environment (IDE) built on Visual Studio Code. Unlike traditional code completion tools, it understands the context of an entire project. When developers issue natural language commands such as "add this feature" or "fix this bug," Cursor can modify multiple files simultaneously, handling coding, debugging, and refactoring tasks. Cursor currently competes in the same arena as AI coding tools like OpenAI Codex, Anthropic Claude Code, and Google Gemini Code Assist. Its core differentiator lies in allowing developers to freely choose from multiple AI coding models, even supporting connections to models outside the official list.

Simon Green, President of Cursor Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ), stated that the platform's main competitive advantages are concentrated in three areas: model neutrality, framework performance, and cost control. Model neutrality enables users unrestricted access to cutting-edge AI models, while its built-in framework allows these models to run faster and more accurately within Cursor. In AI development, a framework refers to the execution and evaluation system that allows AI models to use development tools such as terminals, file systems, and web browsers to perform tasks, verify results, and correct errors.

Regarding cost control, Green noted that customers can choose high-performance or low-cost models based on the nature of their workloads. This flexibility has become increasingly important as many enterprises' AI spending exceeds expectations. Industry examples show that mobility platform Uber exhausted its annual AI coding budget in just four months, while Microsoft and Amazon have adjusted their respective AI tool usage strategies. Green emphasized that Cursor empowers developers to choose which models to run, helping manage token costs more effectively and enabling enterprises to achieve a stronger return on investment (ROI).

When asked whether the SpaceX acquisition would affect Cursor's model neutrality, Green responded that the acquisition would not change Cursor's open strategy or its commitment to supporting multiple cutting-edge models. When SpaceX announced in April that it had reached an option agreement to acquire Cursor, tech publication InfoWorld cited Deepika Giri, Head of AI Research at IDC, who noted that Cursor's zero data retention (ZDR) agreements with vendors like OpenAI and Anthropic could change under SpaceX ownership, and that Cursor's model neutrality might weaken due to a potential bias toward xAI. Green stated that prior to the acquisition, Cursor had already collaborated with SpaceX and used computing resources from its Colossus data center, and that the company's existing philosophy, business strategy, and expansion plans remain unchanged.

In terms of Asia-Pacific market expansion, Cursor has entered the first phase of its growth strategy. Green revealed that the company plans to increase its headcount to 200 employees within the next six months. South Korea and Japan are listed as the two priority markets in the region. Cursor expects to host an event for the South Korean developer community within the next two months and officially enter the South Korean market within four months, establishing a local office and beginning local hiring. Green stated that Cursor has already begun collaborating with several South Korean companies and will continue to explore opportunities for partnership with local enterprises.

Simon Green attributes Cursor's global opportunities to the profound transformation underway in the $1.8 trillion software industry. He emphasized that Cursor's vision is to create an autonomous software factory by combining ease of use, powerful framework capabilities, model neutrality, and an agent-driven software development lifecycle.
