en.Wedoany.com Reported - The UK government has announced increased investment in a series of projects exploring the value of self-driving vehicle applications, which fall under the Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) Pathfinder programme with a total funding of £150 million. Computer Weekly has revealed that the programme will run until 2030, serving as a key initiative to unlock the potential of the UK's connected and automated mobility industry.

The CAM Pathfinder programme, introduced under the government's "Advanced Manufacturing Plan," aims to address the real-world challenges facing connected and automated vehicles on their path to market, providing funding for projects developing "world-first" technologies, products, and services, spanning areas such as cutting-edge software and intelligent transport services. The UK's connected and automated mobility industry is estimated to be worth £3.7 billion.

Funded projects include autonomous excavators, expanded autonomous bus trials, and autonomous airport vehicles. The programme requires these projects to demonstrate that the technologies or mobility services being developed can help the industry become safer, more sustainable, more inclusive, and more productive; by accelerating the development, deployment, and adoption of such technologies and services, they will drive investment and growth, and unlock innovation in the transport sector.

The CAM Pathfinder is delivered by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), with support from Zenzic and Innovate UK. CCAV is a joint policy unit of the Department for Transport and the Department for Business and Trade; Zenzic was co-founded by the UK government and industry to advance the connected and automated mobility ecosystem and guide the UK's accelerated transition to autonomous driving.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) estimates that by 2040, connected and automated mobility could deliver a £66 billion annual boost to the UK economy. Beyond passenger vehicles, the construction sector is also seen as a major beneficiary, with automated off-highway machinery and logistics expected to improve site safety and efficiency. The latest batch of projects will create high-value jobs, increase productivity, and strengthen domestic supply chains by supporting innovation and commercial deployment across multiple regions of the UK.
